Why is JEE Mains held twice in the year 2022?

JEE Main exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to admit candidates for UG courses in top engineering colleges of India. This is a preliminary exam which is conducted in computer based format (CBT). It is considered as one of the toughest engineering exams.

Apart from the IITs, this examination helps students get into other reputed engineering colleges and institutions as well, such as CFTIs, NITs, etc.

The application form for the JEE Main 2023 is yet to be announced. However, based on the previous reports, JEE Main is going to be conducted twice in 2023, in mid January and April. The application forms for JEE Mains 2022 were available from March 2022 and the last date was in April. The registration process was via online mode. Nonetheless, various changes are being implemented in the exam pattern from JEE Main 2023 onwards. The application form and the procedure to apply will soon be available on the official website, i.e. jeemain.nta.nic.in, along with the important exam dates.

Major changes being implemented by NTA in the exam schedule:

1. In 2021, NTA announced that the JEE Main exam will be conducted 4 times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But later in 2022, NTA decided to conduct the JEE Main exam two times a year. However, the exams were conducted in June and July months, instead of mid-January and April. In 2023, students are expecting the exam to be conducted two times. This is being done so that students get a fair chance to improve their scores in a short duration of time.
2. It is not mandatory for a candidate to appear in all of the sessions.
3. Although, if a candidate decides to appear for more than one session, then NTA will consider his/her best of the scores to prepare the merit list.
4. A candidate needs to submit only one application for one session or even for more than one session.
5. The application window for the next session will open immediately after the declaration of the first session’s result, so that students get enough time to apply for the JEE Main 2023 exam.
6. If any candidate was not able to apply for the 1st session, then he/she can apply for the subsequent session once the applications begin, after the declaration of result.
7. Candidates will get a single confirmation page for all the sessions, instead of multiple confirmation pages.

Following changes have been introduced in the JEE Main exam pattern from JEE Main 2022 onwards:

1. The question paper will have 90 questions, instead of 75.
2. The question paper will have two sections, Section A will have 20 MCQs and Section B will have 10 numerical based questions.
3. Students have to attempt only 5 questions, out of the 10 questions in Section B.
4. There will not be any negative marking in Section B.
5. Overall, out of 90 questions in the exam, a student has to attempt a minimum of 75 questions (i.e. all the 60 questions from Section A and 15 questions out of 30 from Section B).
6. Now, the JEE Main exam will be conducted in more than 3 languages. It will be conducted in a total of 13 languages including English, Hindi and Gujarati. The other 10 languages are Bangla, Kannada, Marathi, Assamese, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu and Telugu.

Changes in the JEE Main fee payment:

1. Students have the freedom to apply for just one session or for multiple sessions while filling the form. They can pay the fees accordingly.
2. A student can move the fee forward for the next session, if he/she was unable to appear for the previous session of JEE Main exam.

The aforementioned changes might benefit the students in some or the other way. They can select their choice of language for the test and so on. JEE Main 2023 exam will probably be conducted with all of these changes implemented, in January and April.
