The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducts a national level test called the “All India Bar Examination (AIBE)” for law students to test their eligibility to practice law in the country. The test assesses an advocate’s basic analytical ability and comprehension of basic legal concepts.
After qualifying for the exam, the Bar Council of India awards candidates the “Certificate of Practice”, which is mandatory to practice in the Indian court of law. As per the AIBE website, BCI conducts the AIBE exam in 40 cities across India in 11 languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, and Punjabi. The registration dates for AIBE 2022 are not announced yet, but they are expected to be announced in May or June 2022. There is no age limit for the test, and candidates can attempt the exams any number of times. This article highlights the AIBE revised syllabus for the 2022 examination.
AIBE Syllabus 2022
An aspiring lawyer must pass this exam in order to practice law in India. Until AIBE 2020 XV, it was an open-book exam, but from now onwards candidates are not allowed to carry books to the exam center. Therefore, it is necessary to go through the AIBE syllabus for 2022 before the dates are out, as it will give candidates some guidance for their preparation. Candidates can know which subjects or topics are relevant and which carry more weight-age for marks. For example, Constitutional Law is expected to have ten questions, whereas Intellectual Property Laws will only have two. There are 19 subjects in total, which are classified into two categories: category I and category II. The table below lists all the topics covered in the AIBE syllabus 2022, as well as the number of questions for each topic.

The topics are arranged in decreasing order of the number of expected questions for each topic*.
The AIBE exam is an offline objective type exam with 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) that must be solved by marking answers on an OMR sheet. Each question has four options out of which only one is correct, and the candidates have to mark the correct one. There are no negative marks for incorrect answers, and each correct answer earns one mark. The duration of this exam is 3 hours and 30 minutes.
